Room 20 watched a short movie to try and find an answer to our question. It is fairly tricky stuff, but after we had done some note taking and note making we had information to write a short statement to help explain how different seasons occur.
The Snakes and The Owls share some of their writing about this:
The earth is tilted. When New Zealand is pointing to the sun it is summer. We will have hot longer days. In America it will be winter because it will be further away from the sun. The days will be colder and shorter.

Earth tilts on it's axis. When the earth spins around you won't fall off. When the southern hemisphere is pointed towards the sun it will be summer. The northern hemisphere is pointing away from the sun, it is winter-colder shorter days.

How do seasons change? The earth moves around the sun and different countries face the sun. When the different parts face the sun the different countries have different seasons.

The earth is tilted on it's axis. When we are in summer on the bottom of the earth we are nearer the sun, so that means the top side of earth is in winter because they are further from the sun.

When New Zealand is turning towards the sun it is summer in the southern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere it is winter.
